According to Gerd Gigerenzer, writer of “Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious”, intuition isn’t about “knowing” the answer; rather it is about using your instinct to understand what information is irrelevant and can be discarded. Gigerenzer also serves as director at the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Human Development.

Defining Intuition

While there is no ‘correct’ definition of intuition, it is often described as a force that surpasses all human intelligence. Almost everyone experiences something known as a “gut feeling” in one or the other situation. This gut feeling is that inherent reasoning which propels you to perform an act or take a decision without giving justifications such as ‘how’ or ‘why’. While a lot of psychological and philosophical research has been done to understand the concept of intuition; it is still an area that leaves much room for exploration.

Here are some examples of intuition-based decision making

  • You knew which candidate to hire out of the two who had very similar credentials.
  • You felt like it was time to shift your career.
  • You felt a certain way about a person or a situation, for instance, you knew that you couldn’t trust them with your child.

Listening to your intuition

It isn’t easy to reach out to your intuition when you’re in a difficult situation. There is so much clutter in the form of information and thoughts, that you are left feeling distracted and frustrated. One of the best ways to connect with your gut during these times is to step out of the situation. Take a break and go for a walk, breathe deeply or meditate. Even something as simple as sitting quietly in a coffee shop may allow your intuition to speak to you more clearly.

It is also extremely important to be true to yourself by acknowledging the uncomfortable feelings. These often serve as a guide to you and can help you take the right decision. Journaling is yet another useful way of getting connected with your thoughts and feelings and hence to your intuition.
